Wine description: Jacques Thienpont’s vision to create a St Emilion to rival his extremely famous Chateau Le Pin in Pomerol, started to take shape when he purchased the Grand Cru property of Chateau Haut Plantey in 2009. He changed the Estates name to L’If, the French word for yew tree, to match Le Pin and Château Haut Plantey is now the second wine. It is easy to see why he chose this property, located on the same chalk table of land as its highly rated neighbours, Troplong Mondot and Valandraud, the estate is already making quite a stir among the top critics. Produced from 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet-Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon this wine displays a nose of red cherries with some cassis notes and a hint of cigar, in the mouth the wine is quite full with lots of layered red and dark fruits, polished tannins and a wonderful freshness.
